Snow Day!

Supposedly we’re supposed to get 11 inches of snow overnight tonight!  Please cross your fingers for me.  I could use a day off!

Some days, I’m the best teacher ever.  I don’t yell, I have all the patience in the world, I tease and laugh with my kids, it takes a lot to shake me.  Other days…I’m the teacher the kids hate.  Every little thing sets me off, I get disappointed and frustrated when my kids don’t understand something or can’t do something, I yell first and talk later.  I just wish I knew what made a good day good and a bad day so horrible.  I wish I had some control over it.  Some meditation or something, anything, that would help me get back on track when I’m frustrated.

How do you all stay calm/de-stress?  Especially those of you with kids or who work with kids?

Money Money Money Money….Money

You have to sing the title of the post…

And I don’t got none.

In my relationship, I’m responsible for the money.  I tried to let Noah be in charge one month, and not all of our bills got paid on time and we had late fees, etc. so….I had to take it back.  Being responsible for the money SUCKS.  A lot.  This is a typical conversation in our daily lives.

Me: “Wow.  I really like that t-shirt.  I’ve been needing a (insert any color here) tshirt.  Oh man.  It’s $20.  That sucks.”

Noah: “Just get it.”

Me: “Really?  I probably shouldn’t.  It’s a lot of money and I already have (insert number here) shirts.  It’s ok.  If it’s still here next week I’ll get it then.”

Noah: “Just get it.  It’s no big deal.”

So I get it.  The same thing happens with going out to eat, except then it’s Noah who’s pushing us to go out to eat and I give into him.  And before you say it, we do have a budget.  We just don’t stick to it.  We do better when we have cash and we pay everything in cash because at least then I can watch the money leaving our hands.  But once I start using the debit card, forget it.  Because I’m not good at balancing the check book.

Anyway.  Life with money isn’t all bad.  I tutor after work two nights a week (well, one lately b/c of basketball games) for an additional $100 a week.  And I work in the breakfast room and lunch room at school for extra monies.  And starting soon, I’ll get tutoring on Saturday mornings for the OGT (Ohio Graduation Test) for extra money too.  It’s not like we don’t have money.  We just have too much debt.  We currently have just shy of $9,000 in credit card debt.  There.  I said it.  But we’ve already paid off about $2,500 in credit cards and student loans since Oct.  So I think we’re doing better.  But we could do a lot better.  I just need Noah’s help to be more responsible.

Who handles the financials in your relationship?

The famous Interview MeMe

My answers are below, but first, if you would like to play, these are the rules…

1. Leave me a comment saying, “Interview me.”
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. I get to pick the questions. (note– I can’t guarantee original questions for all. Depends how much caffeine I have drank that day. Or how lame of questions you will tolerate- e.g., what’s your favourite number?)
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

These questions are a la this lovely lady.
1. What’s your favorite form of punctuation?
I think my favorite form of punctuation is the ellipses.  I love ellipses.  I enjoy spreading them throughout emails and text messages with abandon.  I even love saying the word ellipses.  (By the way, I really liked this question, I don’t think anyone has ever asked me this question.)
2. If you could relive any one day in your life, what day would it be?
If I could relive any day, I would relive my wedding day.  I know I know, gag.  But seriously, I would.  Do you know why?  Because I don’t remember it.  Like at all.  I have vague flashbacks of random moments, but no coherent thoughts.  I would walk slower, look around more, say my vows slower, and just relish in our first few married moments together.
3. What do you think it would take for you to stop blogging?
I think when I become a mom, I’ll stop blogging.  I don’t think I’ll have time or energy to blog.  At least for awhile.  I’m in awe of the moms who can do it, but I’m just not sure if I will be able to.  I’m sure I’ll need blogging at that point…need other human contact and confirmation that I’m doing the things I should be doing but…yeah, I doubt I’ll continue.  At least for a little while.
4. Have you ever had an “almost” moment – where it seemed like things were just about to start but they never actually did? Job-wise, relationship-wise, friend-wise, etc.
Ummm….not that I remember actually.  I’m racking my brains, but I got nothin’.  If I think of something tho…I’ll be sure to let you know.
5. What would your dream bathroom look like?
Ooo…this is an easy one.  It would be huge.  Ginormously huge.  It would be all subway tile.  White and black grid type pattern on the floor and colored glass on the walls.   A big clawfoot tub.  A big funky mirror over the vanity.  A vanity with double sinks.  Lots of storage.  It would be white, chocolate brown, grass green, and royal blue.
Anyone else want to play?

Happy New Year!

New Year’s Eve went well.  Some of the usual suspects were absent from the party and they were greatly missed.  It’s not quite the same without them, but we had fun nonetheless.

Fireworks were a hit.  Thanks to Caleb for bringing the good stuff.  And although some of it headed towards the house, luckily nothing caught on fire to singed or anything like that.  I do believe he might have burned his hand…

Shots were taken, some were spilled on the dog, most ended up in our mouths.  The dog needed a bath yesterday b/c he was quite sticky!

I made my first drunk dials.  3 to be exact.  Two to my parents to leave a message on their cell phones wishing them Happy New Year! and one to a friend’s husband who was being lame.  We were watching Shaun of the Dead and the phrase of the night was “Get Fucked” so we thought it would be a great idea to call the friend’s husband (from a number he doesn’t know) and scream “Get fucked!” into the phone and quickly hang up.  Hopefully he’s not still pissed…Noah’s a little irritated with me 🙂  But then again, he usually finds me to be obnoxious while drunk so we tend to avoid each other.  He claims I wasn’t too bad, but I saw the look on his face when he said it.  He was humoring me!

Anyway…one of my favorite pictures from 2008 came from New Year’s and I thought I’d share it.

Wishing you all a wonderful, happy, healthy, wealthy new year’s!

Wrap Up

Because everyone else is doing it…

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
umm….I’m sure I did something in 2008 that I’d never done before.  Maybe I started knitting in ’08?  I think so…I also took a trip to North Carolina which is a state I’d never visited before!

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don’t make New Year’s resolutions…but this year, my resolution is to have more sex with my husband 🙂  When you get married, the frequency goes WAY down so…my resolution is to have more!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.  Thank goodness.  Otherwise I would be wanting one more than I already do…

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Again, Nope.  Thank goodness!

5. What countries did you visit?

Sadly, I did not leave the good ‘ol US last year.  But hopefully 2009 or 2010 we’ll be headed to Japan!

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
I’d like to have all of our debt paid off which means I need more self control.  We did pretty good so far.  We’ve paid off about $2500 in debt but we still have around $7 or 8k left so…getting that paid off would allow us to put Japan and new kitchen counters on the credit cards!

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
There’s nothing big that stands out on a personal level so…let’s hope something will stand out in 2009!  For good reasons…

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Paying off three credit cards and a student loan!  Yay!

9. What was your biggest failure?
I don’t think that I failed at anything…or that anything when particularly wrong.  I think I could have had more patience with my students and my family.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not really.  I fell off my bike and bruised my wrist pretty bad but other than that….pretty healthy overall!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I think a Wii was our best purchase!  Even tho we don’t play it as much as we should.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My students were actually really well behaved at the end of the year last year.  I credit myself with finally getting through to them!  They made me proud!

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
President Bush. I really can’t go into that any more. It’ll just upset me.

14. Where did most of your money go?
The house.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
My knitting, my birthday (ahem, our birthday), getting a kitten (which is on hold indefinitely), hanging out with friends, reuniting with old friends, my husband…

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?

I don’t really listen to popular music…maybe Coldplay’s Ipod commercial song?  That I can’t think of the name to right now even though I listened to it while I was running errands today…

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

a) happier or sadder?
b) thinner or fatter?
c) richer or poorer?
Happier, thinner, and richer!  Wow.  The trifecta! 🙂

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
I wish I had worked out more and hung out with friends more.  Not even necessarily gone out, but hung out.  I miss people.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Worrying.  I worry far too much.  About things that don’t need to be worried about.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Christmas eve was with my family and Christmas day was with Noah’s family.

21. Did you fall in love in 2008?

No…but I am IN love.  Does that count?

22. What was your favorite TV program?

Grey’s Anatomy and thanks to the writers strike I now watch Lipstick Jungle.  Also, the Office.  Thursday nights are tough nights for us!  We want to watch 3 shows that are on at the SAME TIME on Thursdays.  Geesh.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Umm…Nope.  Don’t think so.  I don’t think I really hate anyone…

24. What was the best book you read?

Whichever one of the Twilight books that came out in 2008.  I do so love Twilight.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Coldplay’s new album I suppose…possibly the Fratelli’s or the Juno Soundtrack (was that ’08?)

26. What did you want and get?
Lots of things…I pretty much get what I want…

27. What did you want and not get?

a puppy…which is totally not practical and unnecessary.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?

No Country for Old Men…that was ’08 wasn’t it?  I loved that movie.  Closely followed by P.S. I Love You.  Which upon closer reflection…they didn’t come out in ’08.  Crap.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 25 this year and we have a big blowout party!  It was loads of fun and much drunkenness was had by all.  Including my very first hangover over.  I’m getting old…

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

I don’t know…it was a pretty good year…

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?

Boho casual.  Is that a style?

Knitting

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Gerard Butler….mmmm.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
Er Duh…the election!

35. Who did you miss?
My mom, I feel like we don’t know each other anymore.  My friend in Holland, my friends that we finally figured things out with and my grandma.  Maybe my Grandma the most.

36. Who was the best new person you met?
New person in 08?  Hmmm…Mike and Kim.  They are pretty fantastic!  Oh and Aiden too!

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
Sometimes you catch more flies with honey.  Even if it’s hard to have honey sometimes.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
“Come on baby, give me a little more you.”
