Turkey Trot 2010

This year Noah and I ran the Columbus Turkey Trot.  In years past, he’s run and I’ve stayed home because we were afraid to leave the turkey home alone.  The Turkey Trot takes place literally two miles from our house, so we figured the turkey would survive alone for an hour.  The top 1000 men and 1000 women finishers got to take home a pumpkin pie.  That was Noah’s goal, but I figured that I wouldn’t be able to get one.  No biggie.  When we woke up it was pouring down rain, but not too cold.  By the time we actually got to the race it had slowed to a light drizzle and by the time the run was over, it wasn’t raining at all.  Overall I had a good time.  The course was “hillier” than I would have liked, but that’s because I don’t like hills.  And I’m irritated because I didn’t manage to start my watch so I have no actual time.  The clock when I crossed the finish said 40.02 but I think it was slow.  It wasn’t actually a chip timed race, it was a gun start, and with the crowd at the start I walked for a few minutes before I was able to be through the start.  So…who knows.  And my only other complaint was at the finish.  I never found the water.  I found fruit and granola bars, but no water.  After talked to a few other friends who ran, it appears there wasn’t any water?  Not sure.  But!

I won a pie!!!  Noah got one too, which was to be expected.  But I got one too!!!  Yay me!

After the race we came home and finished making lunch.  It was delicious and our families were on their best behavior.  All in all it was a pretty good Thanksgiving!

Ten on Tuesday

Thanks to Chelsea for doing this.  You make my once a week post easier 🙂

1. What are your plans for the holidays? Do you travel at Thanksgiving? If you celebrate Christmas, do you travel then, too?
We don’t travel for Thanksgiving.  Both sides of our families come to us.  Although this year will be a smaller gathering than normal.  Christmas is a different story.  We usually go to my parent’s house a few days in advance, go to my grandma’s for Christmas Eve, and are back in Columbus with Noah’s parents for Christmas morning.

2. How do you make the plans for the holiday? If you have a significant other, how do you decide which family to visit?
This has been figured out through trial and error and lots and lots of complaining!

3. Do you have your Thanksgiving meal at lunch or later in the day?
We do a late lunch so that Noah’s family can make it down here.  Then my family leaves after lunch and his usually stays for dinner too.

4. Do you have a favorite Thanksgiving tradition?
Nope.  Just eating and sleeping!  Although we do run one the Turkey Trot in the morning before everyone gets here.

5. After a big meal do you lounge around or get up and take a walk?
We lounge for sure.  No walking or exercising around here!  We do that before the meal.

6. Do you shop on “Black Friday” or do you avoid it?
We avoid it.  We usually don’t leave the house.  We do go buy our Christmas tree and then we spend the rest of the day at home snuggling and decorating for Christmas.  I don’t like traffic and the deals aren’t worth it.

7. When do you usually finish your Christmas shopping?
I try to have it finished before Dec. 1st but it doesn’t always work out that way.

8. Do you and your significant other exchange gifts? Is there a budget?
We don’t usually exchange gifts.  We have a hard enough time figuring out what to ask for from other people.  Plus we’re awful and can’t wait until Christmas to exchange gifts.

9. When do you decorate for the holidays?
We go get our tree the day after Thanksgiving and start then.  It usually takes us all weekend and then some depending on the weather.  We need decent weather to put our outside lights up.

10. Do you go “all out” with the decor or do you keep it simple?
We go all out.  I do the dining room table, the kitchen table, outside, the living room and this year we’re doing the bathroom too.  We have multiple tubs of Christmas decorations!

Racing and Painting

Saturday we got up early to run the Westerville Game Day 5k.  The proceeds went to support the MidOhio Food Bank and the Central HS Cross Country team.

The race was really well organized and a lot of run.  It was chilly, but not too bad and I was defintely over dressed.  Oops.  I didn’t do as well as I had hoped to.  Still haven’t checked the official results, but I’ve decided I’m going by my watch.  The start wasn’t chip timed, it was gun timed and I wasn’t very near the front.  Also, the walkers crowded toward the front so there were some issues passing all of them.  I wish race organizers would start the runners first and then the walkers.  That way we wouldn’t have to run around them.  Part of the problem at the start was some guy decided to pass some walkers so he swerved toward me.  He brushed my leg with his as he went past me and then he proceeded to crash.  He fell pretty hard and glared at me as he got up.  I felt bad, but I didn’t trip him on purpose.  I didn’t really even trip him, he ran into me and then he fell.  So that sucked.  Overall the race was good, the course was clear and easy to follow, I got in a little race with a guy right at the end so that helped me dig deep and go for it.  Still didn’t get the time I wanted but there’s always next time!

Then we came home and painted the kitchen.  It looks amazing.  I’m so grateful to have all the help we did.  There were four of us painting and we still didn’t finish until around 6:30.   It’s not that big of a room but it just took a long time.  Only two coats but…lots of trimming in.  And we painted the doors, windows, and trim so that took extra time.  We have some touching up to do today but it’s not horrible.  I’m so glad it’s done.  I’ll post pictures when all the tape is down and the room is put back together.

Working today but it’s dead.  Back to the grind tomorrow but luckily I’m off Wed, Thurs, and Friday.  The whole family is coming to our house for Thanksgiving dinner so we’ve got lots of cleaning to do.  It’ll be a busy next few days but hopefully I’ll find some time to relax too.

What are your plans for Thanksgiving?

Crappity Crap

So…our scale?  Yeah it’s a peice of crap.

The scale says that I have gained a pound a day for this whole week.  I almost always weigh myself on Mondays just to see how bad the weekend was.  It said I was up a pound for Monday.  No biggie, I figured I hadn’t been on my best eating behavior nor had a ran this past weekend.  We had lots of pizza and fried things.  Wednesday I weighed myself again.  I figured I had been better Monday and Tuesday and had ran Tuesday so it should be the same if not a few ounces lower.  But it wasn’t.  It was up a pound.  So I check Thursday, another pound.  And this morning?  Another pound.  I am up four pounds this week.  Four pounds!  That means that I am consuming 3,500 extra calories EACH DAY.  On top of the 1,100 calories I burned running this week.  Supposedly I’m up 6 pounds since this time last year.  And…yeah, my clothes still fit just fine, they’re still loose.  So I can’t believe that I’m up 6 pounds.  If I am, where did it go?  So yeah…I’m a little irritated.  I’m a lot irritated.

And I’m getting a damn new scale.

Ten for Tuesday

1. What is your favorite breakfast pastry?
My favorite breakfast pastry would have to be a McGriddle…if that counts as a breakfast pastry 🙂
2. Were you ever in a Thanksgiving or Christmas play?
Nope.  Not an official play.  I was in choir from elementary through high school so we did Thanksgiving and Christmas programs.  One year I even dressed up like the turkey!
3. What is your favorite clothing accessory?
Large, chunky, natural stone rings.  I have a large turquoise, buffalo turquoise, onyx, and an amber.  I feel naked if I don’t have a big ring on my middle finger!
4. What is your favorite item of clothing?
Shoes shoes shoes.  I LOVE shoes!
5. What is your favorite color and why?
It’s a three way tie between pink, turquoise, and yellow and honestly…I don’t know why!
6. What is your favorite type of Christmas cookie?
Cut out sugar cookie with homemade decorators icing.  Yum!  But let’s be honest…there aren’t many Christmas desserts I won’t eat!
7. What is your favorite scent (food, perfume/lotion)
Tie between vanilla and peppermint.  If you could combine them together, I’d be in heaven!
8. What is your favorite household cleaner?
None?  I don’t really like to use chemicals to clean if I don’t have to.
9. When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up? And what did you actually grow up to be?
I wanted to be a large animal zoo keeper but my mom said that she wouldn’t pay for college for me to do that because they don’t make enough money.  So I decided on teaching.  It came naturally to me and I love working with kids, seeing their accomplishments.
10. What is the last song or album you bought?
Hmm….Matt and Kim was the last CD I bought I think…

If you want to participate go check out Roots and Rings and be sure to let me know.  I love learning random things about you!

I feel like I keep making this promise to myself that I will blog more and then….I don’t.  I don’t make time for it and I fall behind.

This weekend we moved my parents.  Hopefully for the final time.  It kind of sucked.  Their old house was a restored 1900’s farmhouse on 5 acres.  It was huge and…it was home.  Their new house is a ranch style, built in the 70’s.  It’s smaller than their old house over all and the rooms are A LOT smaller.  It smells like smoke.  The property is beautiful but the house…not so much.  My parents furniture is way too big and over sized for the rooms and there’s flat out too much of it.  On top of that, my mother has suddenly turned into an old woman.  She painted the rooms these awful, pastel/gray/weird colors.  It just…it just isn’t home.  I was cranky and negative and now that I’m in my own home and away from the situation, I feel bad.  I know it will work out, but I don’t know if it will ever be home.

Work is going better.  Some days are really good.  I’m starting to be torn about changing positions and/or schools.  I’m wondering about sticking it out another year.  I know I know, it seems early to be thinking about these things but…applications for positions need to go out in February and I need to update my resume and all that junk.  Plus, for me, I need to be absolutely sure.  I feel like I put out applications and had interviews last year and took this job without being absolutely sure and it led to a lot of confusion and weird feelings on my part.  I want to be sure.

I took a week off running and I’m hating myself for it.  I need to run consistently.  I want to do Tri’s next year and I am getting ready to pay to join a Tri team.  I need to be running consistently.  But this week I found all kinds of excuses.  Noah was sick, my back hurt, parent teacher conferences, moving my parents…all kinds of excuses.  Saturday we’re running the Westerville Game Day 5k.  I really really really want to beat my time of 8:44.  But if I don’t work at it…I won’t make it.  I also can tell I’m gaining weight.  I’m up around 2 to 3 pounds from this time last year and…I know the number on the scale isn’t the be all end all but…it’s important to me.  I need to find the willpower to cut back on the sweets and work on the running.  I also wish I had a running partner who wasn’t Noah who ran my same pace.  I’ve stopped running with the Tuesday group because we’re running in the dark and I’m slower than everyone else.  I don’t want to make someone slow down for me, but I am definitely not running in the dark on the bike path by myself.

This week should be good.  I’m going to really concentrate on my running.  I’m going to focus on making my school day the best I can and more positive for me and the students.  It’s going to be a good week!

Cop Out

Noah’s sick again and my body has decided it hates me so….I’m cheating and copying.  If you don’t read Erin you need to…her babies are tres adorable!  (Or should I say duo adorable? I’m a dork…I know)  And she got this from this lady.  So I’m copying.  If you want to copy…please do!

1. Who makes your Thanksgiving dinner?
A lot of people make our Thanksgiving dinner.  Noah and I make the turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing.  Our families bring the rest.  Usually corn, stuffed mushrooms, home baked bread, green bean casserole, and loads of dessert!  Yum!  This set up has worked well for us for about 6 years now so…basically our whole marriage!  I love the chance to have family at our house.
2. What is your favorite recipe the includes pumpkin? (bonus points for including the recipe)
I actually hate pumpkin.  So I got nothing.
3. What are 5 things you want for Christmas?
Gosh this is hard….fun socks, Kirby Spins a Yarn for the Wii, clothes, gift cards, and books?  Not good at this one…this is why I don’t have a Christmas list yet…
4. Does your family draw names or do you buy for everyone?
With Noah’s family, we buy for everyone.  It’s just us, his sister, and his parents.  With my dad’s family we do a White Elephant.  With my mom’s family we draw names but everyone buys for my grandparents and of course we buy for my parents too!  On the flip side, Noah and I don’t usually get anything for each other!
5. How do you feel about motorcycles?
I’m not sure.  I think vintage motorcycles look cool and if Noah bought one I wouldn’t really care (as long as he stays off the highway) but I don’t know if I’d ever have the guts to get on one myself.
6. What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy Saturday?
Sit on the couch with a good book, the cats, and my snuggie.
7. What is the coolest thing to do in your city?

Um…depends on who you are.  For some people it’s our zoo.  For others it’s the college football team.  For me it’s the food and the little boutiques.
8. Do you paint your fingernails?
Most of the time, no.  But occasionally I get the urge and be cool and trendy and I paint them.  Then I slowly let them chip away until I’m to embarrassed and have to remove it.  I wish I was someone who painted their fingernails tho…
9. Who is your favorite actor over the age of 50?
Richard Gere.  He’s hot. ’nuff said!
10. Do you have a high school letter jacket?
Sure do.  My parents just sent it home with us a couple weeks ago while they were packing up their house.  I wish she had kept it.  One of our friends found it and put it on to keep warm out by the fire and I made him change.  I worked hard for those letters!
